On May 21, 2022, London along with other communities from Chatham to Ottawa experienced a devastating storm mixed with a Derecho as well as tornadoes in some areas. In London, our crews worked tirelessly to restore power to over 30,000 customers at the height of the storm and continued to coordinate with other services to improve efficiencies to remove fallen trees and poles as well as tree limbs and other debris to safely restore power to our customers. Power was restored to all of London by May, 26th, allowing London Hydro to respond to a call for assistance from Hydro Ottawa.
London Hydro sent two large crews along with one forestry crew and much needed supplies to assist with the power restoration in Ottawa. The crews arrived in Ottawa on May 27, 2022. At that time 31,500 customers were still without power. Following direction from Hydro Ottawa, London Hydro crews worked along with the other crews to aid in restoring power as quickly as possible. Customers were genuinely appreciative as they greeted the crews servicing their properties.
"While the Ottawa community has weathered tough storms over the years, the derecho storm that devastated our city on Saturday, May 21, left a trail of destruction like nothing we have ever experienced before. I would like to thank London Hydro for coming to our aid during one of the darkest times in our history. Your crews did not stop until power was safely returned to each and every home and business in our community. We truly appreciated the long hours you worked and the days you spent away from your families. If you ever need us in the future, we'll be there."
