The London-2-London Pilot

The London-2-London (L2L) pilot aims to motivate the local adoption of clean energy using distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar, battery storage and electric vehicles.

The pilot will benefit utilities, their customers and DER owners by providing innovative solutions to meet each of their unique energy demand needs:

  • Customers - Customers will reduce their carbon footprint by participating in an energy trading marketplace with their neighbours and utility to access green energy without installing their own DERs.They will occasionally participate in demand response events that target specific neighbourhoods during times of higher usage to help reduce strain on the grid.

  • DER Owners - The L2L Pilot provides those with solar, battery and electric vehicles a way to gain greater value from their DERs by allowing them to track the performance of their assets and trade excess energy they produce with other customers.

  • Utilities - Through the L2L Pilot, utilities gain visibility to customer-owned DERs and near real-time access to DER information, allowing them to manage existing assets and grow local green energy sources. This overall view of DER assets gives insight into the community’s actual carbon footprint and showcases the benefits of DERs to the electric grid.

The L2L Pilot will deliver a scalable, Open Data DER platform using the Green Button Standard, which addresses the market need for utilities to integrate the rapidly growing number of customer-sited DERs into the grid to identify and leverage those resources for grid balancing.

Registration for this pilot is now closed.

National Resources Canada and the UK’s Ministry of Business, Energy and Industry Strategy selected the L2L team as one of three Canadian finalists, along with four UK finalists, from a group of 44 project proposal teams competing in the Power Forward Challenge.
